What are fillers?

Fillers are ingredients that add volume and mass to the pet food, but that generally have very little, if any, nutritional value. Fillers are typically the by-products of grain and cereal processing; things like corn cobs, peanut hulls, wood fiber, straw, and soy beans.

Then why use them?

In most cases, just to simply add volume and mass to the pet food. Filler products are very cheap and can be easily added to the pet food under the current laws of manufacturing and labeling. The resulting food is one that has a low nutritional value per unit volume. You end up having to feed your pet a higher volume of food to make sure that it gets the nutrients that it needs.

And Flint River Ranch is different?

Absolutely! Flint River Ranch does not use fillers in their food products. The grains in the foods are good parts of the grain, not the hulls or the leftovers. Wheat is the primary grain source because it is more easily digested than corn (used heavily in other pet foods) and because it is one of the most nutritionally balanced. By using only quality ingredients and no fillers, Flint River Ranch pet foods are dense in nutritional value. You end up feeding your pet less and your cost per feeding is actually lower than leading retail brands.
